Fight Childhood Hunger in Davis School District
Join us in our No Hunger Zone campaign

It’s hard to learn when you’re hungry.

Research shows children who don’t have enough to eat at home struggle when they come to school. They have a difficult time focusing in class, are more likely than their peers to exhibit behavioral issues and report they do not like coming to school. In comparison to their classmates, these students miss more days of school due to illness and experience lower academic achievement. In the long term, they can suffer growth and developmental impairments that take a toll on their physical, emotional, social and mental well-being.

Furthermore, children who experience chronic hunger are more likely to face significant health problems in adulthood. Studies show these students are less prepared to enter the workforce than the rest of their graduating class.

Childhood hunger is a serious problem in the United States.

You might be surprised to learn it’s a serious problem in our community as well.

Did you know one in five children in Davis County experience “food insecurity”? This is a term used to describe the situation when a person may not know where their next meal will come from.

The Bountiful Food Pantry estimates 17,000 students in Davis School District are at risk of hunger. In an average elementary class of 30 students, this means six of those children may not have enough food to eat at home.

At Davis Education Foundation, we believe no child should go hungry in Davis School District. As educators, we know a child’s most basic needs must be met before they can be successful learners. Our hearts break when we think of young people suffering in silence in our schools.

Because of this, we have partnered with The Bountiful Food Pantry to create No Hunger Zone, an initiative to bring food assistance to students in all 90 schools of Davis School District.

Since No Hunger Zone’s inception in 2017, 120,000 Pantry Packs have been distributed to students to bridge meals they may miss when not at school. Satellite community food pantries have been opened in three DSD schools. Every school now has a Principal’s Pantry, where students who come to school hungry can get assistance throughout the week.

Still, the need is great. We need your help to continue funding No Hunger Zone and to grow its programming to reach more students. We rely on our amazing community to make a difference for these kids.

We invite you to donate throughout January to fund food assistance programs in Davis School District.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to fight childhood hunger in our community. Each dollar donated can provide up to three meals for a child in need. All funds raised through this campaign will be used to provide students with food.

Every donation makes a difference. Together, we can create a community where no child has to worry about chronic hunger.

Thank you for your continued support of Davis School District and for your efforts to make Davis County a No Hunger Zone.

No Hunger Zone email to parents #1
A message from Reid Newey, Davis School District superintendent
(to be published on foundation blog and sent out at launch of campaign)

Dear parents,

Every day in Davis School District, students come to school hungry. The Bountiful Food Pantry estimates one in five of our children may not receive enough to eat at home. This food insecurity can have drastic and detrimental effects on students’ ability to learn.

Our overall mission in the district is reflected in our motto: “Learning First.” When students do not have enough to eat, it’s difficult for them to be their best and brightest selves in the classroom. For these students, meeting their nutritional needs is the first step to attaining their educational goals.

To combat hunger in our district, Davis Education Foundation has launched a program called No Hunger Zone to provide food resources for students in our district.

I ask you to donate to the campaign. Our community has proved time and time again in the power of giving where you live. If we each donate to the cause, we’ll make an impact on childhood hunger in our district.

Thank you for all you do to support our students and our schools.
